Condition

The sculpture appears sound. The bronze armature is securely fastened to the metal base, which is in turn secured to a wooden base. The wooden body is held at by top of the armature with a v-shaped fork. The head is in turn secured to the top of the wooden body, but is loose, as is the wooden body. There are a number of cracks to the iron head where it has been worked, and some further casting imperfections, most of these seem to be inherent to the piece. The components of the face are all securely attached to the sculpture. There is possible evidence of casting residue in places, and a few spots of possible rust. To the back of the wooden body there appears to be evidence of historic woodworm. There is some surface dirt throughout. This excepting the work appears to be in good overall condition. The work is secured to a wooden and bronze base. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
