Condition

The canvas is original. There is some slight inconsistency to the shape of the canvas along the upper and lower edges due to irregularities in the stretcher bars. There are some very fine, hairline cracks to the paint surface at the extreme corners at the overlap. There are also some incredibly fine lines of craquelure to the paint surface in places, including one stretcher bar mark along the right hand side of the painting, only visible upon extremely close inspection. There is some light surface dirt throughout. This excepting the work appears to be in excellent overall condition. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals one fine line of very sensitively executed retouching through the upper part of the sitter's chest, one small area in her proper left shoulder, and a small number of tiny retouchings at the extreme edges. The work is held within a carved and painted wooden frame. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
