千巖飛瀑萬壑

「狂草時期」(1959至1972年)當中,趙無極的繪畫以中軸式構圖蔚為經典,顯示藝術家以強大的意志支撐畫面,以豪邁的創意縱橫馳騁,開創一己的抽象世界;除此以外,藝術家尚有另一種特殊構圖,形成「狂草時期」另一種較為罕見的形態。在這種結構下,藝術家將畫面整體作幾何形狀分割,形成兩大塊面的背景,色彩呈強烈對比,塑造穩定而富於戲劇衝突之空間,再以帶有狂草特徵的乾筆,生成畫面重心,建構饒有山水意味的視覺焦點,《17.12.60》 (拍品編號1028)即為這種特例之代表。其上下兩部呈八二之比,上部紅彩濃艷厚重,筆觸從上而下層層加疊,如湍湍瀑布奔騰飛瀉,沖激下端千巖萬壑,翻起銀屑般的白浪滾滾,橫向兩邊傾瀉而去。本作呈如斯結構,一方面是藝術家在較早的「甲骨文時期」(1954至1959年)曾經從漢碑汲取靈感,作為抽象構圖的養份,形成以德國斯圖加特藝術博物館典藏的《致友碑》為代表的風格;本作誕生於1960年,尚屬「狂草時期」之初,因此仍能隱約發現上一階段之餘緒;另一方面,趙無極此時剛剛完成美國之旅,與紐約畫派的密切互動影響尤新,美式抽象表現主義的雄悍豪邁,亦為「狂草時期」所吸收。在《17.12.60》當中,不難發現作品的基本結構與俄裔美藉抽象大師羅斯科的作品遙相呼應,兩者都運用相似的畫面分割,卻塑造出截然不同的抽象空間,若以本作與由三藩市現代藝術博物館藏、並將於本年5月16日於紐約蘇富比當代藝術晚拍呈獻的羅斯科《無題》對比,即可發現羅斯科以色塊作幾何分割,將平面空間導向大虛的靜穆,趙無極以線條疊加成矩陣,在寧謐中見詩性之空靈;饒有趣味的是,常玉在四○年代一度旅居紐約,自此其畫作在背景處理上亦頗見羅斯科之影響,若把常玉晚年的作品與《17.12.60》作對比,竟能發現兩代旅法華人大師雖然在具象與抽象的路上各奔前路,卻因為同樣經歷美式抽象的歷煉,而顯出若干構圖思路上的相似,在研究二十世紀中葉這個華人油畫發展的轉折點當中,誠為隱微而重要的一點。

與此同時,趙無極之摯友,法國抒情抽象大師蘇拉吉自五○年代起亦致力於抽象創作中結合東方書法。蘇拉吉對於東方書法的理解自出機杼,尤其喜用扁平齊整的排筆或刮板推抹油彩、塑造板直而流暢的線條;他山之石可以攻玉,趙無極在《17.12.60》使用嶄新的方式呈現線條,亦或與蘇拉吉的切磋交流之中獲得靈感,若以蘇拉吉在1960年前後的作品與本作對比,即能發現兩位摯友在藝術上實有潛移默化的彼此影響,在國際藝術史上堪稱佳話;除本作之外,趙無極還用了相近構圖為畢生摯友、法國桂冠詩人亨利.米修創作了《向亨利.米修致敬》,透過此作與《17.12.60》,可以發現藝術家刻意藉著此一構圖範式,表現一種內斂沉潛、卻底蘊豐厚的格調,在整體飛揚跋扈的「狂草時期」,另闢一道滄桑大氣的精神景象。本作原為紐約艾奧拉.海佛斯迪夫人舊藏。海佛斯迪夫人系出名門,父親為紐約信用擔保公司(摩根大通前身)主席,自己則於1965年獲得哥倫比亞大學美國文學碩士,先後於《紐約太陽報》、《生活》雜誌、《星期六文學評論》等重要刊物工作,日後成為耶魯大學委員會秘書,負責出版英國傳記作家包斯威爾之研究論文,同時在《紐約時報》大量撰寫書籍評論;及至晚年更於1998年策劃了「美國女性作家:1965至1920年」展覽,在美國文壇頗具地位;同時,海佛斯迪夫人亦以收藏藝術品聞名,尤以美國「垃圾箱畫派」及「哈德遜河畫派」的藏品知名。本作自納入私人收藏之後,一直未曾公開於世,在接近六十年後再度亮相,實為聯繫亞、歐、美洲戰後抽象的典範鉅作。
