Condition

On the extreme left there is a small vertical crack (5cm long), which does not distract from the overall appearance. There is a minor patch of retouching in the red curtain above the sitter's head. The pallet is typical of the artist.

In 1776 the sitter married William, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh, the younger brother of King George III. The illegitimate daughter of Sir Edward Walpole, she was the widow of James, 2nd Earl of Waldegrave (1715-1763).

This miniature is mentioned in the artist's account book, 18 January 1779: H.R.H. the Duchess of Gloucester and a child delivered in 1776'.

The pose of the duchess is freely based on Reynold's portrait which was painted in circa 1771. Crosse has added to the composition a portrait of her son Prince William Frederick and a lap dog. Further in the background, European trees have been replaced with palms.
