We are grateful to Jovan Nicholson for his kind assistance with the catalouging of the present work and compiling the below note.

After the Colonels came to power in a coup in 1967 Winifred Nicholson was less inclined to visit Greece and so made two painting trips to north Africa. First she travelled to Tunisia in 1969 and then Morocco in the spring of 1971, visiting Marrakesh, Rabat, Chechovan, Sidi Bonsaid and the Barbary Coast, and where she witnessed another military coup. Arab Roses was almost certainly painted on the second of these two visits and displays the artist’s characteristic enthusiasm for flowers as a means of expressing her exuberant sense of colour.
