In-8 (204 x 135 mm). Maroquin fauve, dos à nerfs orné, caissons fleuronnés, large dentelle à double encadrement de filets dorés aux plats, dentelle intérieure, tranches dorées sur marbrures, sous chemise à rabats titrée et étui percaline fauve (Trautz-Bauzonnet). Balzac illustré par Gustave Doré. Sixième édition. 425 dessins imprimés sur les bois originaux de la Société Générale de Librairie rachetés par MM. Garnier frères, le tirage de 1855 et celui de l'édition ordinaire de 1861 ayant été faits sur clichés. Un des 25 exemplaires sur Chine (n° 12). Avec le titre en rouge et noir et le frontispice, parfois manquant. "Tout ce qui est amateur de livres a une dévotion spéciale aux Contes Drolatiques […] De tous les ouvrages de Doré, s'il n'en reste qu'un seul, ce serait celui-là !" (Henri Beraldi, Les Graveurs du XIXe siècle). Bel exemplaire relié par Trautz-Bauzonnet.
