A wonderful intimist composition by the great nabi master, Vuillard chose here to depict Misia, the wife of his friend Thadée Natanson, a muse and patron for whom he devoted boundless admiration, and who became one of his close confidants over the years. A regular attendee at gatherings at the Natanson residence at 9 Rue Saint Florentin in Paris, Vuillard followed them to their country house La Grangette in Valvins, southeast of Paris, close to the one rented by Stéphane Mallarmé, whose garden he painted that same year (Musée d’Orsay, Paris). This charming composition incorporates all of the pictorial vocabulary that is so specific to the nabi style.
