1885年春季,莫内完成了兩幅描繪吉維尼附近田野景色的作品,刻劃繁花似錦的樹木、遠處的小鎮教堂和房屋,其中一幅正是今次上拍的《吉維尼的春日早晨》,而這幅畫的姐妹作則一度長期借展於佛羅里達州聖彼得堡美術館。在創作此畫(拍品編號12)期間,莫内主要以住處四周豐富而多變的風景爲主題。1883年,莫內舉家上下移居到吉維尼的一個小鄉村,在當地專心探索自然環境,享受當中的寧靜。

莫内即時被吉維尼的景色深深吸引,到埗數天便立即寫信給其藝術經紀人保羅・杜杭・胡埃:「我希望在安頓下來後,馬上創作出偉大的作品,因爲我非常喜愛郊外的環境。」(節錄自《莫内居於吉維尼的年頭:印象之外(展覽圖錄),紐約大都會藝術博物館,1978年,頁15-16》。吉維尼距離巴黎約四十英里,現代化生活的痕跡幾乎完全沒有在此出現,反觀塞納河附近的許多村落,則早已面目全非。莫內從吉維尼的小山丘俯瞰整個鄉村,又觀察家中附近的道路和田野,亦從塞納河沿岸、住處的花圃園林中找到源源不斷的創作靈感。

這些吉維尼風景畫,多以當地豐沃的自然景色為重點,像其著名的《罌粟花田》便是一例(圖3)。春季景色作品尤其充分展現莫內對鄉郊美景的鍾情,例如本品,以及現屬斯特林和弗朗辛·克拉克藝術中心珍藏的姐妹作《吉維尼的春日》(圖1),正式莫內對初春一片萬象更新的熱烈歌頌。莫内為本畫挑選了一個觀景絕佳的地點,田野和樹木盡收眼底,中距離則可見小鎮教堂和屋頂,自然與人工景物和諧交融,令人聯想起梵谷筆下的奧維小鎮鄉郊(圖4)。

1892年,芝加哥富商波特・帕爾莫與妻子貝莎向莫内的藝術經紀人保羅・杜杭・胡埃購得《吉維尼的春日早晨》。在此前一年,理查・布烈特在巴黎的杜杭・胡埃畫廊欣賞過莫內作品展後如此寫道:「貝莎・奧諾雷・帕爾莫……成為了十九世紀法國海外最重要的印象派風景畫收藏家;她也是第一位領略到莫內系列創作之重大意義的收藏家」(R.R·布烈特,<再看莫內的乾草堆>,《芝加哥美術館研究期刊》,第II冊,第1號,芝加哥,1984年秋季刊,6頁。1902年,波特·帕爾莫離世,貝莎承繼了一個極為可觀的藝術收藏,並且繼續殷切地尋覓珍品,一度擁有九十幅莫內作品。

當年,波特·帕爾莫決定將所有身家留給妻子時,曾引起旁人爭議;但事實證明,帕爾莫夫人是一位傑出的商人。她在1918年離世時,遺產比她當年繼承的多出不止一倍。她龐大的藝術收藏一直留在芝加哥的新哥德式帕爾莫家族大宅(圖5),由兩個兒子繼承;他們在1928年將大宅及宅內所藏的多件藝術品售予工業家兼發明家文森特·雨果·本迪克斯。本迪克斯是一位極具前瞻眼光的汽車和航空業發明家,他將宅邸改名為本迪克斯大宅,又添置多件藝術品。帕爾莫夫人的藝術收藏大部份被贈予芝加哥美術館,當中包括莫內、德加和雷諾瓦的作品。《吉維尼的春日早晨》和其他原屬本迪克斯基金會的作品在1942年舉行的帕克·伯奈特畫廊拍賣會上售出。二十年後,現藏家購入了此畫,由家族傳承至今逾半個世紀。
