'There is no doubt that fired clay delighted and fascinated Pablo Picasso: it could fulfill both traditional functions and artistic purposes, while its properties permitted him to combine painting, sculpture and engraving. At the same time, the artist's roots gave him an innate interest in ceramics, since pottery belonged to his everyday surroundings in Spain and formed part of his Andalusian heritage' (Marilyn McCully, Ceramics by Picasso, Paris, 1999, p. 9).
