Condition

The board is stable. The corners of the board are slightly scuffed and there are minor nicks in places to the extreme edges, none of which are visible when framed. There is some frame rubbing along the left edge and some light surface scratches (approximately 2cm. long) towards the upper right corner. There is a small water stain to the upper part of the left edge (approximately 4cm. in diameter). There are scattered pinholes, the two most prominent of which are to the rugby players at the centre of the composition. There is a small scratch to the leg at the far right and a minor surface nick to the background in the lower left quadrant. This work is in overall good condition.

This work was executed in 1927 in the run up to the exhibition of the Berlin Secession in collaboration with the Museum für Leibesübungen. It was created for a mural design for the museum which was ultimately never realised.

We would like to thank Roswita and Victor Pontzen, Archive Albert Birkle, Salzburg, for their assistance in the cataloguing of this lot. This work will be included in their forthcoming catalogue raisonné under the number 792.
