Condition

The picture has been lined, the surface is clean and in good condition - it is ready to be hung without requiring any restoration. There is a craquelure pattern across the surface and the varnish is a little univen but it is not distracting. UNDER ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT There are infillings to craquelure and to the extremities to retouch areas of the paint surface that have been rubbed by the rebate of the frame. The retouching does not appear to be excessive and is to be expected from a picture of this age. FRAME The painting is contained in its original exhibition frame - a highly-decorative carved wooden and gilt example in good condition.

拍品資料及來源

This picture is one of a series of “six-footers” painted by Pyne for the Manchester art dealers, Thomas Agnew and Sons for their wealthy Manchester industrial clients, who had amassed huge fortunes during the Industrial Revolution. Many of these clients had built large country homes in the Lake District which since Wordsworth, had become inextricably linked with the Romantic ideal of natural beauty. The houses were of a scale that demanded large pictures to fill them. Pyne was inspired by JMW Turner, who was to die only four years after this painting was created; it continued the tradition of painting “light" started by Claude Lorrain and brought to a state of perfection by Turner.
