Residual polish. Wear as to be expected from age and when use is considered. Tarnished and minor corrosion.

In an effort to protect his creations from copyists, Jeckyll registered a design for the present fender in December 1875. It was highly unusual for designs to be registered by their designers rather than manufacturers. For instance, Godwin failed to register a single design in his lifetime. 

For a closely related fender, see that illustrated in the Barnard, Bishop & Barnard Catalogue of 1884. Another can be seen in a photograph of Alexander Constantine Ionides' morning room at his 'epoch-making' house, 1 Holland Park (The Studio, Vol. 12, 1897, p. 106).
