Condition

The canvas has been lined. There are areas of faint craquelure visible only on close inspection. Otherwise the works appears to be in a good overall condition UV light inspection reveals a some minor scattered retouching in the sky. Some minor touches in the trees in the upper right of the composition and some further possible retouchings in the lower portion. These are not extensive. Held in a decorative gilt frame.

Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1852, Ward's painting of the Clyde in flood harks back to sketches made in 1811. At the same Academy exhibition, Ward displayed 'The Hunted Stag, caught by the rapids above the Falls of the Clyde', a subject which recorded an episode the artist witnessed in 1811, a stag and hounds being swept over the falls at Stoneybyres Linn, near Lanark when the Clyde was in flood. The present view shows the dramatic falls from below.
