Pugin came to Ramsgate in 1843, in search of 'the delight of the sea with catholic architecture & a Library' as he explained in a letter to John Rowse Bloxham. He built The Grange to live out an idealised conception of life in the Middle Ages, creating a family home nestled in the shadow of a neighbouring monastery built by his son Edward.
