We are grateful to Dr Wendy Baron for her kind assistance with the cataloguing of the present work.

The present work by Sickert is part of the ‘Echoes’ series of around a hundred paintings that draw from designs found in old editions of the London Journal, The Illustrated London News and other 19th-century periodicals.

John Gilbert (1817-1897) was a 19th-century illustrator for The Illustrated London News whom Sickert met as a young draughtsman and long admired.
