rectangular with cut corners, each face later set with miniatures painted en grisaille with tritons, nereids and their attendants, the lid with Galatea, riding on dolphinsmounted à cage within acanthus-chased mounts, the slightly everted rim chased with egg and acanthus, the mounts with unclear maker's mark, possibly JG or C a star between, charge and discharge marks of Jean-Jacques Prévost, Paris date letter D for 1767, Paris petite garantie for 1819-1838

base glass cracked, lining of the base slightly lifting in one corner; otherwise good

The maker's mark is not clear but it is possibly that of Jean George. Jean George died in 1765 but his widow, who then ran the business with her husband's foreman Pierre Mathis de Beaulieu, continued to use his mark until she married de Baulieu in 1768.
