This exceptional table, unique in its kind, is a jewel of cabinetmaking. It was made in Liguria, an area strictly linked to the sea. In this context, it would be easy to explain the presence of marine animals decorating the base and the heraldic Savoy knot below the coats of arms on the plateau – as the Genoa Republic was annexed by the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia in 1815.The adornment of the "coccia", placed under the top and composed of two different timbers, has similarities with other pieces of furniture made in Piedmont and with the documented table of Descales (circa 1838), nowadays kept in the Royal Palace in Turin. The table top is inlaid with two coats of arms, probably those of the Grassi and Abrembio families. The later was from Neapolitan origin, whereas the Grassi were the renown Venetian patricians who built the eponymous palace on the Grand Canal in the middle of the 18th century.
One can suggest that this centre table was made to celebrate a marriage between these two important families during the 19th century. The arms of the bride are on the left of the husband's coat of arms. The two coats are united under the heraldic crown of the husband, in this case a count, wrapped in olive branches above the Savoy knot. As for the base, it is also rich and full of meaning. The marine unicorns are not only the heraldic bearings of the coats of arms mentioned above, they also allude to the purity and fidelity of the betrothed couple. Lastly, the snake, in this context, can be perceived as a symbol of fertility and prosperity.
