Condition

Wax lined. The work has a black plastic border that has been stapled to the outside edges of the work. The surface is visibly dirty and there appears to be discolored varnish on the mother's face. There is craquelure across the picture surface that is most apparent in the lighter pigments and on the figures. There is thickly applied, discolored inpainting visible on the mother's face (visible under UV). A few scratches and scuffs with minor associated loss in the background at upper center and at left, and a very few pinpoint losses at lower center. Under UV: heavy varnish fluoresces green unevenly and in a streaky manner in a number of areas. There is scattered inpainting on the picture surface, mostly to address prior craquelure that is most visible on the child's face and body and on the mother's face (as previously mentioned).
