Condition

Lined. The work presents well. There is a minor 1/4 inch dent in the background at upper left and a faintly visible horizontal stretcher bar mark. Frame abrasion is visible along the upper edge with a few minor associated losses. Under UV: a green varnish fluoreses unevenly, particularly over the figure's face. There are a few isolated retouches in the upper background, as well as a and a group of pin dots of restoration at upper left and inpainting to the aforementioned dent. There are minor retouches to the figure's chin and upper lips and the darker pigments around his proper right eye fluoresce.

Giuseppe Trotta, a celebrated Italian American portraitist, is best known for his portrait of President Woodrow Wilson, which was presented to the Italian Government shortly after World War I. Trotta trained at the Art Student's League and the National Academy of New York and went on to settle in Flushing, Queens.
