Sale: Sotheby's, London, March 14, 1989, lot 154, illustrated
Private Collection, Switzerland (acquired at the above sale)

Condition

Original unlined condition. The work presents well. There are faint stretcher marks visible, corresponding to the upper, right and lower members of the stretcher, the lower with some associated pin dots losses and minor bumping and pulling of the canvas. There are some scattered lines of fine craquelure, notably in the background in the upper half of the composition. There are two minor small areas of paint loss in the extreme upper left corner and in the extreme lower left corner, with some very minor lifting near the latter. Under UV: there is an uneven layer of residual varnish and some minor isolated spots of retouching addressing old paint flaking, including some spots in the background in the upper right corner and two spots in the lower left quadrant. There is a small area of repair in the lower right corner.

While Vilhelm Hammershøi limited his palette to tonal greys, whites and blues, Carl Holsøe employs a more naturalistic palette to render this intimate space. His careful observation of light can be seen in the radiant light of the window shining to the floor and reflecting on the open door’s glossy surface. The wide expanse of wall is a tonal field of diminished hues, enveloping the furniture and objects which evoke a melancholic, everyday narrative.
