Marcel Broodthaers' artistic work, which he started in 1963, marks the transition from Pop to Conceptual art, following in Rene Magritte's footsteps.

Marcel Broodthaers is still a young poet when he meets Maria Gilissen in 1961, who will later become not only a photogrpaher but also his wife. Originally from Limbourg, Gilissen often mingles with fairly dissenting groups from Amsterdam, called the Provo, as well as the Dolle Mina.

Provo use the media, graffiti and flyers to circulate their ideas in a very contemporary way: "Provo is an image" and the inverted apple is one of their symbols. A true social phenomenon, Provo disolves during a grand happening in May 1967. Some off these ideals will resurface in Paris during May 68.

In 1964-65, Marcel Broothaers paints Provo as a sign of support to the Bertozzi father and son, who were great admirers of Provo. Through this painting, Broodthaers describes the movement as a "Poetical Manifestation". The recto of the canvas is painted in yellow and the verso bears the inverted apple as well as the word Provo on each side of the stretcher, drawing inspiration from the paintings by Magritte form the 20's who also used these words.

The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by the Marcel Broodthaers Estate and a certificate of authenticity will be delivered to the buyer.
