Condition

This work is in very good and sound condition overall. Under very close inspection, there are minute and unobtrusive surface scratches visible. Under further close inspection, there is evidence of wear and handling to the extreme edges of the protruding elements, as well as scattered evidence of burnishing and oxidation, most notably on the lower half of the sculpture.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Zhan Wang uses a variety of media—sculpture, installation, photography, and video—to create works that address and play with ideas about landscape and the environment. The artist's most well-known work is a series of artificial rock sculptures, which replicate the rocks found in the gardens of traditional Chinese scholars, but are cast in industrial materials like stainless steel and chrome, transforming something traditional into something modern.

Executed in 2000, this work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
