《Boogie Woogie,小女孩在紐約》作於二〇〇六年,並於同年在劉野的首次美國個展中展出,將深具感染力的戲劇場面呈現人前。畫中的小女孩背對觀眾站立,面前是皮耶·蒙德里安的《New York. 1941/Boogie Woogie》──他在旅居紐約期間開始繪畫並完成的作品只有三幅,此作便是第一幅。窗戶似的蒙德里安式幾何構圖為畫面帶來空曠的中心,不但投射出文藝復興時期以繪畫作為通往外部世界窗扉的觀念,而且回應了凝視遠方的窗前人像這一浪漫手法,例如巴爾蒂斯一九三五年的《Lady Abdy》和一九五七年的《Girl at a Window》。這般場景神秘莫測,富含戲劇張力:眺望窗外的可人兒究竟心懷希望,還是滿懷傷悲?窗戶到底暗示著枷鎖,還是自由和可能性?無論答案是甚麼,觀眾對作品的思考都彷如安靜、害羞的窺看,既為眼前的謎團吸引,亦希望保持距離,生怕打斷窗前女子的白日遐想。本作是別具劉野特色的一流佳作,當中的視覺語彙處處包含藝術和文化指涉。他的作品經常向巴爾蒂斯致意,自然滲入這位前輩畫中靜謐的神秘感;他亦仰慕奧地利波希米亞詩人里爾克,後者的詩歌經常提及窗戶的意象,以致劉野的畫作令人不禁想起里爾克的詩句;本作還直接引用一幅重要的蒙德里安作品,可見他對文本互涉的純熟運用已成為其風格的一大特色。

文學與敘事氣息濃重的場景在劉野的作品中佔有重要席位。他在一九六四年生於北京,不久後即隨兒童文學作家父親下放農村,在文化大革命的影響下度過童年。那時整代知識份子的思維意識都處於審查狀態,幼年的劉野只好以秘密的方式瞭解世界,享受著私底下有限的自由,既充滿快感,又危險刺激。當四歲的他發現家中一個秘密的箱子存放著政府查禁的書籍,箱子裡的一切就成為黑暗閉塞的城堡中唯一的光亮。他最喜歡王爾德《道林格雷的肖像》,書中講述一幅肖像裡的青年無論經歷怎樣可怕的歲月,都能保持年輕。這個故事為劉野的創作生涯埋下種子,並在後來綻放出充滿想像的奇幻圖景。

八〇年代,劉野考入中國工藝美校,一方面接受嚴謹老派的藝術教育,另一方面經歷社會改革開放和西方文化的滲入。在如此繁雜和矛盾的語境中,他從蒙德里安、維梅爾和保羅·克利身上汲取養分,發展出獨特的視覺語彙。劉野從央美壁畫系畢業後繼續前往德國深造,期間留戀超現實主義及形而上藝術家雷內·馬格利特和喬治·德·基里科的作品。一次次面對陌生文化的裹挾、洗禮,他必須做出選擇,精煉技巧,不斷對抗過去,又不得不承認其價值。結果,這種文本互涉成為劉野繪畫中的重要核心,向觀者展現夢中之夢、畫中之畫和戲中之戲。劉野經常將不同來源的標誌性意象融入作品當中,藉此與蒙德里安、巴爾蒂斯乃至過去與未來的自我開闢深刻的藝術對話。

本作正是這種文本互涉的出色佐證。一如之前所探討,本作重現了巴爾蒂斯窗前少女的神髓,並直接向蒙德里安的《New York. 1941/Boogie Woogie》致敬。為了得出這個效果,劉野不僅借鑑了蒙德里安的美學,還從這位荷蘭藝術家創作Boogie Woogie系列時的個人、文化及歷史背景中取經。四〇年代初期,蒙德里安逃離歐洲的二戰戰火,西渡美國尋求庇護,甫抵岸就深深迷上美國爵士樂,特別是跳舞音樂Boogie Woogie,這種節奏強烈的即興鋼琴演奏發源自美國的非裔人音樂,並於二戰期間在紐約的爵士樂酒吧流行一時。蒙德里安在曼哈頓度過第一晚時聽到這種音樂,他後來對希尼·雅尼(Sidney Janis)說,自己決定「在畫中加入一點『boogie woogie』」。這些作品充滿跳脫的色彩和排列有致的線條,組成蒙德里安著名的Boogie Woogie系列,相較之前的作品,這個系列的構圖更加錯綜複雜,顏色更加華麗喧囂,在視覺上亦更加引人注目。此系列受曼哈頓的景物和聲音啟發,將現代大都會的活力和精密結構融入畫中。由此可以想像,劉野首次踏足紐約時的好奇和興奮也一樣融入本作當中。蒙德里安在創作Boogie Woogie系列時曾經說過:「城市必須在畫中得以昇華──整個城市生活都必須反映其中」;再看本作佈局,在劉野畫中得以昇華的不單是城市,還有歷來多元的藝術元素,以及人所共有的想像、迷思和好奇心。
