Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. The colors are bright, fresh and clean. There is light evidence of wear and handling along the edges including hairline craquelure at the pull margins with some minor pinpoint resultant loss at the tips of the corners. There are areas of hairline cracking in localized sections of the composition, most prevalent in areas of thick impasto, all of which are stable. Under close inspection, scattered minor pinpoint spot accretions are visible along the lower center of the canvas. Under Ultraviolet light inspection, the aforementioned spot accretions fluoresce brightly but do not appear to be the result of restoration. Framed.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

"The role of the artist, of course, has always been that of image maker. Different times require different images. Today when our aspirations have been reduced to a desperate attempt to escape from evil, and times are out of joint, our obsessive, subterranean and pictographic images are the expression of the neurosis which is our reality...I just dropped the whole idea of classical mythology as subject matter and decided that the proper subject for me was subjective free-association of images and symbols which I couldn't explain."
