This piece is a replica of the famous commode created by Jean-Henri Riesener, which was part of Pope Pie VII furniture in his room, during his visit to Fontainebleau in 1801, hence its name: "Commode du Concordat". The tripartite front and the trapezoidal central panel, with a luxurious nature morte in marquetry, are particularly characteristic of Riesener's work. A similar commode, with a richer gilt-bronze ornament, was delivered by Riesener in 1778 for Louis XVI's retirement home at the Chateau de Fontainebleau. It was then transported to Versailles to furnish the library of Louis XVI. This model gave rise in the late nineteenth century to many replicas by the best cabinetmakers, Linke, Sormani or Dasson.
