Condition

In overall fairly good condition with surface dirt, notably in the crevices, and wear to the patina consistent with age and handling. Heavy cast with a few casting flaws visible in some places. The Roman soldier is attached to his horse with two corroded iron screws. St Paul is attached to his horse by one corroded iron screw. There is a small hole to St Paul's horse proper left rear thigh (possibly where a missing sword was attached). There is a break visble to the Roman soldier's horse's proper right hind leg just below the shank.The Roman soldier's rough iron spear is corroded. The wooden base has a few large losses to the black paint and there is some surface dirt, notably in the crevices.

The Master of the Bull Hunt was a Neapolitan sculptor active in the circle of Lorenzo Vaccaro (1655-1706). The movement of the Roman soldier aiming at Saint Paul is comparable to the figure of Saint George in the Museo Riminaldi, Ferrara, and the figure of the falling Saint Paul to the one of a Defeated Moor sold at Sotheby's on 2 April 1985, lot 144 (see J. Montagu, op. cit., p. 100-103 and 111).
