Eugène Lami was regularly invited to the parties and entertainments given by Emperor Napoléon III and Empress Eugénie, at the Tuileries palace and at the castle of Compiègne. He executed the watercolour presented here after Les Commentaires de Cesar  performed in Compiègne on November 26th 1865 by illustrious amateur actors such as Count and Countess de Pourtalès, Marquis and Marquise de Galliffet, Princess Pauline de Metternich,  baron Lambert, general Mellinet, Count d'Aguado, Countess de Poilly, Davilliers, Mrs Bartholomé and young Imperial Prince in the center, Napoléon III and Eugénie's only child. The actors have put their signatures on the mount.

Alexandre-Philippe Régnier, marquis de Massa was a famous personality during the Second Empire. Empress Eugenie charged him to write plays and other theatrical entertainments. One of his most famous plays is Les commentaires de César which was performed in the theatre of Compiègne on November 26th,  1865.

This watercolor will be included in the Catalogue Raisonné of Eugène Lami's works being prepared by Caroline Imbert.
