Condition

In overall good condition with surface dirt, notably in the crevices, and minor chips along the edges of the drapery and to some of the high points, consistent with age and handling. The Virgin's proper left hand has been restored with four fingers partially replaced. Christ's proper right foot with a loss to the big toe and small chips to the other toes. There are 3 small losses to the veil covering the Virgin's head. The back of the marble group is hollowed out. The base has been carved separatly. There are two small losses to the drapery below Christ's stomach. There are two fixing holes to the back where the group was secured to the wall.

This group with a highly dramatic intensity can be compared with the Genoese models by the French sculptor Pierre Puget (1620-1694) or by Filippo Parodi (1630-1702), who was also active in Venice and Padua.
