Charles Matton is one of these artists who created an independent and personal art in spite and outside of the academism largely accepted in contemporary art.
His very unique pictorial technique arose from this approach through which he completely rethought the means of painting.
The man was a meticulous illusionist. He knew that painting was an illusion. That all paintings are trompe-l'oeil, like all theories are "trompe-le-sens". That all paintings consist of placing bait where the supposed reality of the world is too naïve to get lured.
The miniature models –sorts of paintings in three dimensions- present the most perfect illusion stripped of all "luring effect", since the combination of different media frees the illusion from the illusionism, hence producing an invisible force: that of a place but also of life.
