Condition

Very good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Exceptional old patina with no evidence of cleaning. Beautiful regularity of copper lines to the face. Le Corneur label to the rear. The diamond base is complete with significant old erosion to the lower part.

Cette effigie d'ancêtre mbulu ngulu relève du style classique développé par les Kota Obamba sur la rive gauche de l'Ogooué : visage ovale, concave, orné d'un motif central cruciforme plaqué, à partir duquel s'agencent les motifs complexes d'un décor obtenu par l'assemblement de fines lamelles. Elle s’apparente à la figure de reliquaire du Museum für Völkerkunde de Berlin offrant une semblable élaboration, entré dans les collections en 1904 et identifié comme "Mbanse-Bavili, sud Gabon/nord Congo (Chaffin, Kota, 1979, p. 172).
