Exprimant parfaitement l’idéal féminin Baulé mais également la noblesse de l’esprit représenté, elle s’impose en chef-d’œuvre de son corpus et s’apparente étroitement à la statue masculine de l’ancienne collection Vérité (Fagg et Elisofon, La Sculpture Africaine, 1958, p. 97, n° 121).
The remarkable visual qualities of this majestic Baule female figure are expressed in the beauty of its forms and modelling, making it a major figure within the rare ensemble that is the great Baule statuary. The exceptional refinement of the sculpture, the precision in the treatment of the bracelets and scarification, the exaggeration in proportions and the ultra-naturalism, particularly discernible in the detailed clavicles and hands, attest to a strong artistic individuality. The erosion of the head, once covered in natural hair, and the disappearance of the lower limbs, find an echo in the sublime nuanced patina in clear tones revealing the figure’s great antiquity.
A perfect expression of the Baule feminine ideal as well as the nobility of the spirit depicted, this work is a masterpiece of its corpus and closely related to the male statue of the former Vérité collection (Fagg and Elisofon, La Sculpture Africaine, 1958, p.97, No 121).
