- Wagner, Richard
- Lettre autographe signée au journaliste suisse Victor Tissot. Munich, 9 juillet 1865.
2 pages in-8 (214 x 134 mm). Signée "Richard Wagner". In French. So rief der Lenz in den Wald". ---------------------------------Cataloguing in English : Autograph letter signed, about Die Meistersinger, Munich, 9 July 1865 2 pages, 8vo, Munich, 9 July 1865, some dustmarking and creasing, slight splitting at folds. [to the Swiss journalist Victor Tissot, in Munich], expressing his pleasure at reading the sonnet Tissot has composed in his honour in the wake of the first production of his opera Tristan und Isolde, and inviting the author to the first performance of fragments from his new opera, Die Meistersinger, which will be given before his patron King Ludwig ("..je me permets de vous inviter de plus à une audition spéciale, mercredi prochaine à 2 heures au Residenztheater où je ferai entendre au Roi et à quelques amis intimes des fragments de mes nouveaux ouvrages...") and looking forward to meeting him one evening between the hours of 6 and 7. On 12 July 1865, a month after the epoch-making premiere of Tristan und Isolde in Munich, Wagner performed sections of his opera Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg, three years before the complete premiere in 1868. It was a concert performance of parts of Act 1 Scene 3, including Walther's Trial Song, "So rief der Lenz in den Wald". The tenor was Ludwig Schnorr von Carolsfeld, who had created the title role in Tristan und Isolde, but who died tragically only nine days after the Mastersingers concert. Provenance : Acquired at Hotel Drouot, Paris, Castaing sale, 19 June 1987, Lot 81. Référence : Sämtliche Briefe, volume 17 (2009), no.196; published after J. Tiersot, Lettres françaises de Richard Wagner (1935), with some divergences from the autograph (apparently untraced since May 1933).
