Minna ayant laissé entendre que Wagner avait une relation avec l'épouse d'Émile Ollivier, Wagner se dit être persuadé que Minna n'est "pas coupable de ce dont il l'accuse". Il estime qu'il vaut mieux oublier cette affaire et juge "inopportun et inutile d'entrer dans de plus amples explications sur ce sujet". "Je vous confie à votre sentiment de justice d'apprécier s'il serait bien fait de votre part d'adoucir en quelque sorte l'impression produite par votre rigueur sur ma femme qui se sait innocente et qui a le droit de me rappeler que je suis son mari." Il souhaite que cette discussion n'entache pas leurs relations. Éminent avocat et futur premier ministre, Émile Ollivier (1825-1913) avait épousé, en 1857, Blandine, la fille de Franz Liszt et de Marie d'Agoult. Bien que Wagner fût presque séparé de sa première épouse Minna, celle-ci l'accompagnait encore à Paris en 1860-1861. Ils ne divorcèrent jamais, Wagner ne se remaria qu'après la mort de Minna en 1866. Toutefois, Minna avait toujours l’impression de ne pas être à sa place à Paris et, constamment jalouse, le soupçonnait d'entretenir une relation avec la charmante Blandine Ollivier. Minna se plaignait qu’elle rendait toujours visite à Wagner et pour qui elle était "possédée par une haine compulsive" (Newman, vol 3, 174). Après la mort de Minna, Wagner finira par épouser Cosima, la sœur de Blandine. Référence : Sämtliche Briefe, vol. 13, n° 126 ; lettre publiée pour la première fois par Tiersot en 1935. -------------------------------------------Cataloguing in English : Autograph letter to Émile Ollivier, about a quarrel between their wives Minna and Blandine, Paris, 1 June 1861 2 pages, 8vo (20.9 x 13.2cm), Paris, 1 June 1861, a few small stains and creases expressing his distress at hearing of the contretemps between Minna Wagner and Blandine Ollivier (whose sister Cosima he later married), and his understanding of Ollivier's position in the matter, denying that Minna ever behaved in the way he has accused her of, advising him not to go into details of the matter, to moderate somewhat the violence of his accusations and to appreciate that Minna, who knows herself to be innocent, has the right to expect him to spring to her defence as her husband, expressing the hope that that this will not sour their relations in the future ("...Maintenant, mon cher Ollivier, je vous confie à votre sentiment de justice d'apprécier s'il serait bien fait de votre part d'adoucir en quelque sorte l'impression produite par votre rigueur sur ma femme qui se sait innocente et qui a le droit de me rappeler que je suis son mari…..."). Émile Ollivier (1825-1913) was a prominent lawyer, later Prime Minister, who had married Blandine, the daughter of Franz Liszt, in 1857.  Although Wagner had by now mostly separated from his first wife Minna, she still accompanied him to Paris in 1860-1861; they never divorced and Wagner remarried only after her death in 1866. However, Minna felt out of place in Paris and, perpetually jealous of any woman there, suspected that Wagner was in a relationship with the charming Blandine Ollivier, who, she complained, was always visiting him and for whom she was "possessed by a compulsive hatred" (Newman, volume 3, 174). Nevertheless, Wagner is adept at claiming the high moral ground in this letter.
