- L'Italiana in Algeri.
-- J.-J. Chaponnière (ex-libris). Référence : G. Rossini, L'italiana in Algeri, éd. A. Corghi, 1982, p. XXIII. -- Hirsch IV, 1259. -- Gossett, The Operas of Rossini, 1970, III b 1, p. 245. --------------------------------Cataloguing in English : L'italiana in Algeri, Opera comica in due Atti, Maiz: B. Schott, figlj editori di musica di S.A.S. il gran duca d'Assia [Hesse], about 1819 FIRST EDITION, oblong 4to (c.24 x 33cm), vignette to title by Cöntgen (showing Isabella embarking at Algiers), plate no.1277, words in Italian and German, priced on title ("Fl 13 L30"), contemporary French/Swiss green half calf, gilt-stamped front cover ("J.L. Dupan."), title to spine, Chaponnière book-label, worn but sound, some light foxing, some off-setting from the printer's ink (eg pp.100-101) The fine title engraving shows the heroine Isabella landing at Algiers, where she sings the cavatina "Fra questi luoghi barbari". This first edition was based on manuscript scores used for early productions in Milan (April 1814) and at the Hoftheater in Vienna (February 1817), differing from Rossini's original score and including some inauthentic numbers, such as Isabella's cavatina. The original premiere in Venice in May 1813 contained secco recitatives, but they were not composed by Rossini and are not included here. There was no contemporary printed full score of this opera, which circulated in manuscript, and the first Italian vocal score by Ricordi of Milan dates only from 1829-1830. Provenance : J.L. Dupan: he was an appeal court judge in Geneva. His collection of music seems to have concentrated on Italian opera, copies of which can be found in libraries listed in RISM-Schweiz. Référence : G.
