Excellent condition overall. The ligature is exceptionally well preserved for a piece of this age.

Objet de prestige plus que veritable outil cette herminette cérémonielle atteste de l'élégance de l'art de l'archipel. Au raffinement du décor couvrant en chevrons répondent la finesse de la ligature et la beauté de la lame taillée en basalte. Présente dans la collection William Wyatt Gill avant 1879 cette herminette s'apparente très étroitement à celle conservée au Leningrad Museum (inv. 402-11) acquise en 1891 par Micklucho Macklay ; elles illustrent toutes deux l'art ancestral de l'île de Mangaia.
