Condition

Please refer to the department (guillaume.mallecot@sothebys.com) for an updated image of the work on our website. The work is executed on its original canvas and is not relined. The colours are fairly accurate in the printed catalogue illustration although the overall tonality is softer and it does not accurately convey the thickness of the material. The edges near the rims present irregularities as visible in the catalogue illustration, some of which present losses. Important cracks are located along the right edge some of which are visible in the catalogue illustration and some of which have been stabilized. There is a small area repainted in the middle of this edge. Visible upon close inspection, the overall surface present light hairline cracks mainly visible in the grey and light green areas. Under Ultra Violet Light inspection some of the cracks restoration near the right edge are visible as well as some small repaintings near the rims.

Each work (of Staël) stands out as a space where figuration puts seemingly “geometric” shapes under such extreme pressure that they push against one another. Staël escapes classification. Instinctively, he knows what colour owes to “material”. He plays a sort of nameless game that deconstructs and breaks down the line, to make way to “puzzles” and compositions. Such research requires formal skill and stopping the line about to arise.
