Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes, Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work is in exceptional condition. The panel is flat, and the paint layer is stable and clean. There are no losses or retouches. Even though it is intentionally thinly painted, no weakness has developed in any of the colors. The work should be hung as is.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

In his description of Sanford Robinson Gifford's Marshes on the Hudson, the noted scholar Dr. John P. Driscoll writes: "The sparkling quality of light, horizontal format, division of composition in a horizontal two-thirds and one-third manner and the reach of land jutting in from the left foreground are all elements that mark this as an important example of luminist painting" (All That Is Glorious Around Us: Paintings from the Hudson River School on Loan from a Friend of the Museum of Art, University Park, Pennsylvania, 1981, p. 74).

We are grateful to Dr. Ila Weiss, the leading Sanford Robinson Gifford scholar, for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
