The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes, Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work is in very good condition overall. The paint layer is clean and varnished. Retouches are visible under ultraviolet light. There is a group of retouches in the upper left, including a 2 ½ inch line in the dark colors to the left of the three figures. There is a small retouch in the right side of the face of the seated figure to the left of the surgeon. Beneath the left hand of the surgeon, there is a 2 inch vertical scratch that has been retouched. There is a spot of older retouching in the lower center, three on the lower left edge, and two or three in the upper center above the figures. The work should be hung in its current state.
