Condition

The canvas has an old lining, which is providing a secure support. There are occasional areas of craquelure and paint separation which are stable and only visible upon close inspection. There is one vertical line of craquelure approx. 10 cm long near the centre of the lower edge. A small area of surface abrasions below it. There is a smaller vertical abrasion with some resulting paint loss in the lower right corner and a small spot of paint loss below it. These excepting the work appears in good overall condition. The surface may benefit from a light clean. Ultraviolet light reveals an opaque varnish. There are areas of retouching and infilling to craquelure in the background. Some further occasional retouchings to the standing figure; the violin of the violinist next to him; about the two musicians by the right edge and to the flowers in the lower right corner. Some occasional spots elsewhere. Held in a plaster frame.
