This watercolour is in excellent condition with no visible condition problems. The paper is flat in the mount and the picture is ready to hang. FRAME The picture is contained in a simple gilt frame with a clean mount and under glass.

This watercolour was almost certainly made in August 1866 on the artist's honeymoon, following his marriage to Agnes MacDonald, one of four remarkable sisters (one married Edward Burne-Jones whilst the other two were the mothers of Rudyard Kipling and Stanley Baldwin). Poynter made several watercolours on this holiday, including West Wind, Lynmouth (sold in these rooms, 22 May 2014, lot 137 and now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) and another described when it was exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1867 as a 'landscape view from a window in Lynmouth' (Times, 1 May 1867, p.10). Another watercolour painted in 1866 on the Devonshire coast is Castle Rock, Lynton, Devon (sold in these rooms, 'The Ingram Collection', 8 December 2005, lot 247) which was painted in the adjacent seaside town. Lynmouth and its surrounding scenery were becoming increasingly popular as beauty spots in the mid nineteenth century and the area was frequented by many artists at the time.
