Plan of the fortress of Valletta, highlighting the enceinte (innermost ring of the fortifications) as designed by Francesco Laparelli da Cartona, who had been sent by Pope Pius V to assist the Order of St. John in rebuilding the fortifications of Malta all but destroyed in the epic siege of 1565. Under the direction of the Grand Master of the Order, Jean Parisot de Valette, Laparelli laid out a new fortified city - to be called Valletta. This plan reproduces his drawings, presumably supplied by the pope to Lafreri for publication, as a promotional piece to assist the Order in raising the necessary funding.
