Forbes was a writer for the British East India Company, and thus travelled to India in 1765. He was a prolific writer and artist and filled thousands of manuscript pages with notes and sketches about Indian life, wildlife, flora and architecture. Forbes's Oriental Memoirs remains a valuable record of the culture, flora and fauna of India at end of the eighteenth century.
