  • Private Memorandum Books, containing notes on a range of historical and topographical subjects on India and the Middle East, finely illustrated, two volumes:
i) "Fragments, Legends &c" under 22 headings including "The Deccan previous to the Mahomedan Invasion", "Notes on the Kings of Ahmednuggur", "Adventures of a student of the Madrassa of Mahomed Gawan at Beeder", "Account of the City of Muskat in Arabia", and "The Wahabees of Arabia", with an introductory note explaining that they "have been selected from amongst a number of papers ... belonging to an officer of artillery who was killed in battle in India, most of them are original, and the rest are Translations from Persian or Hindoostani Works", with nine ink, wash and watercolour full page illustrations (comprising 3 views of ports in India and Persia, 6 views of Classical Indian architecture), 23 pages with ink and wash vignettes, and with 2 hand-drawn maps and one print inserted, 216 pages, 4to, dated 1843-44, diced calf, gilt edges, clasp, loss at spine and to claspii) Historical memoranda, under six headings, including "Indian Temples and Caves on the Western Coast of Hindostan", "The Hill Country to the West of the River Indus", as well as European historical subjects, with 6 full page ink, wash, and watercolour illustrations, 21 ink and wash vignettes, and 3 hand-drawn maps inserted, 186 pages, 8vo, marbled boards, c.1880s, binding worn (see also lots 209 and 211)
