The full account of the last piece of the jigsaw to fit into the triangulation of India and Russia, and thereby the link connecting the two surveys, hitherto carried out separately. The territory which remained to be completed was a narrow strip of the Russo-Afghan border. The Russian surveyors worked down from the north, meeting the British team working up from the south. This therefore presents a fascinating episode both in the history of the survey and of the relations between the two super-powers of the time.
