autograph manuscript with daily entries during an exploratory journey to Natal to determine whether to migrate to the colony, detailing occurrences at sea, including a waterspout and the ship's difficulties entering Durban harbour, making plain his fear of the dangers both of the crossing and of life in Africa, describing the beauty of the native bush, noting the warm climate and fertility of the land ("...Here are sugar cane, Coffee Plants, Cotton plants, Capsicums, by 100's Castor Oil plants and Lemon trees laden with lemons as large as Cocoanuts. Orange trees and dozens of others..."), recounting advice received from settlers such as E.P. Lamport (who "said every Body was afraid of snakes at first but nobody was ever bitten much and shewed us some photographs of his House, His Sugar Mills and his Lawn", p.111), and the likely profitability of sugar mills and coffee plantations, but noting the rough and primitive life of colonists, the tensions between settlers and the existing Zulu population including an account of a sermon attacking widespread racism within the settler community ("...no microscopic examination could detect any difference in the appearance of the Blood of the White or the Black...", p.[114), 179 pages, 8vo, 23 August 1862 to 4 January 1863, contemporary roan, scuffed

A fascinating insight into how middle-class Victorians weighed up the merits of emigration to settler colonies. Albert Winser, of Tenterden in Kent, travelled to Natal with two of his younger brothers to establish whether the family should emigrate to the colony. He decided against emigration despite the great economic opportunities, out of concern for the safety of his wife and children.
