The collection includes natives and views from Natal, Zululand and Transvaal, and scenes from the Zulu War. Benjamin William Caney (1842-1918) was an owner of a jewellery shop in Durban, South Africa. He was an prolific photographer of Zulu in Natal and Zululand, and worked mostly at the end of the 19th-century.
