Smith was senior partner of the banking firm of Edward B. Smith & Co, located on 15 Broad Street, Manhattan, and was a patron of the arts in his role as a fellow of the Pennsylvania Museum of Art in Philadelphia, as well as a member of various other societies, among them the Historical Society.
