Rod Kelly is one of the country's highest regarded goldsmiths. This beaker highlights his distinctive decorative low relief chasing for which he is heralded, in the highest quality material. The present beaker is one of only eight examples that he has made in 18ct gold and originally was conceived as a series of three beakers sold separately representing wine, water and wheat. After studying and graduating at the Birmingham School of Jewellery in 1983, Kelly trained at the Royal College of Arts under Gerald Benney before setting up his workshop in Norfolk. During his career he has worked almost exclusively to commission, including pieces for 10 Downing Street, the Victoria and Albert Museum, De Beers, various Livery Companies, an members of the Royal Family.
In 1999, he was commissioned by The Royal Mint to design a first class stamp to celebrate the Millennium. He went on to design the obverse of the £2 coin, commemorating the 200th anniversary of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's birth. His latest commissions include the design of the 2008 £5 crown to celebrate the 450th Anniversary of the Accession of Queen Elizabeth I.
In 1999, he was commissioned by The Royal Mint to design a first class stamp to celebrate the Millennium.
