This is the mathematical paper written while Turing was visiting Princeton University and working with the logician Alonzo Church. Turing was invited to become a staff member, but with war looming he elected to return to Britain, where he was almost immediately assigned to work with the Bletchley Park group of cryptographers attempting to break the German Enigma codes.
