In 1814 Peter M. Roget, a London physician most famous for his thesaurus, invented the concept of the log-log scale that was eventually adopted as a standard scale on a slide rule. This paper, which presents his concept for the new instrument, was read to the Royal Society of London on 17 November and resulted in his election to the society. He served as secretary from 1827 to 1849.
